When the truth hurts more than betrayal
A family tragicomedy inspired by a true story, And “We got what we wanted” takes place during New Year’s Eve 1992 when Czechoslovakia was divided. In the main roles the audience will see Eva Holubová, Bolek Polívka, Anna Šišková, Ady Hajdu, Jana Kovalčíková, Jan Budař, Judit Pecháček, Daniel Fischer, Dávid Hartl and Canadian actress Rachel Kramer.
And “We got what we wanted” is the first feature film by Slovak director Michal Kunes Kováč. One of Canada’s most successful producers, Don Carmody, collaborated on the film, Academy Award winner for the film Chicago.
On New Year’s Eve, just hours before the breakup of Czechoslovakia, the Varchal family reunites in Banská Bystrica in front of the church to baptize the newest addition to the family, little Zuzka, daughter of Petr (Daniel Fischer) and Helena (Judit Pecháček). However, Peter misses the baptism because he has gotten his hands on a file of his father Daniel (Ady Hajdu), from which he learns that his father was listed as a ŠtB agent.
Meanwhile, Canadian student Charlie (Rachel Kramer) and Peter’s brother Michal (Dávid Hartl). Neither of the pair remember much from the previous night doesn’t remember much from the night before. Michal, however, invites Charlie home to Banská Bystrica to celebrate with his family the arrival of the New Year. Charlie does not protest.
When Peter finally arrives home, he immediately confronts Father Daniel with his discovery. But Daniel’s heart can’t take it, and he has a heart attack. His life is saved by the quick intervention of a family friend (Bolek Polívka) and the rest of the family (Eva Holubová, Anna Šišková, Jana Kovalčiková, Jan Budař) Daniel is taken to hospital. However, the family can’t go with him and so they have to deal with the shocking events they have to deal with the shocking events on their own.
After Peter reveals the reason for his father’s collapse, more and more Varchal secrets begin to surface and the argument about his father and his motives gathers momentum. As they leaf through the file together, the family is shaken to its foundations with each passing page.
Daniel faces his worst nightmare alone in the hospital. Tormented by the thought of what may just be unfolding in his family home, he confides in Dr. Ivanich (Juraj Loj), who is genuinely intrigued by his story. And while the family rummages through the dusty files of an old file, Daniel tells his sins to a stranger. Slowly, a coherent story emerges in which good and evil merge into an indistinguishable whole. It is a new year. A new country has been established and the Varchals are a new family. Yet one secret remains untold.
